I know pain, I know dread
Look his eyes, they've turned to lead
Tears don't stop the fire
It's killing time

Back from the dead
See your eyes, got nothing left
Kiss me, I am the colder

URIAH HATFIELD
Former bedridden boy here for a good time, not a long time.

GENERAL

FULL NAME: Uriah Anderson Hatfield
NICKNAMES: Riah or Rye if you're feelin' affectionate.
AGE/DOB: 18 / December 1st / Sagittarius (Uriah is a year behind on account of health problems as a child.)
YEAR: Junior
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood, part of a lineage grown out of muggleborns in the mid 19th century.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Male, he/him
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual, but not so het that he won't flirt or make out with other guys at parties. That's just bros being bros. (It's not.)

Uriah has a reputation. He's a notorious flirt and heartbreaker, and he's always available for a quick fling. Some people may think he's trashy, but Riah casts a wide net, which means he's bound to be successful once in a while. Last year he dated Magnolia d'Aguillon, but got caught flirting with other people behind her back. He's not exactly boyfriend material, but will happily humor any girl who wants to try her luck with a bad boy.

HOMETOWN: The wizarding side of Tug Valley, West Virginia, where his family's lived historically (and infamously) for generations.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Uriah's cute and he knows it. He has a rakish smile, big brown eyes and wild brown hair, all of which are staples of the Hatfield siblings. Uriah is notably more vain than his little sister, though. He reaches for styles that let him maintain his devil-may-care exterior while also looking elegantly tousled. Like he just rolled out of bed and is ready to hit the trails, but make it fashion. The end result is that he and Scarlett actually dress quite similar, even though they come at it from extremely different angles.

Another noticeable thing is that Uriah is covered in scars. He has two on his face (one across the bridge of his nose, the other splitting his eyebrow and continuing down his cheek) that he got from a bad fall down a hill the first week he was allowed to go outside with his brother and sister. Others are surgical scars or magical burns from "accidents". He'd much rather brag about the ones he got playing Quidditch or scaling fences back home, of which there are plenty.

HEIGHT: 5'7"
BUILD: Fit but a little frail

PERSONALITY

What would others say is their most prominent personality trait — what's the first thing people notice about them?
Being low energy doesn't stop Uriah from being a big personality. He's social, friendly, and kind of an ass. At parties he's insatiable, and is guaranteed to always get too drunk and kiss too many people. A mess, for sure, but kind of a fun one if you can tolerate his surprisingly prickly demeanor. He likes to get under peoples' skin and, in the same breath, keep them at arm's length.

Confidence appears to come pretty easily to Uriah, but it's really more of a lack of caring. He doesn't really care what people think or what happens to him in the morning, let alone what happens next year or five years from now. That's probably why he's so uninterested in his own reputation. So people think he's a fuckboy who can't be trusted with anyone's heart? Eh, whatever. It's not wrong, and it doesn't really matter. They probably think he's hot anyway.

He's quick to remind everyone that that worrying is pointless, which is a little hard to swallow when Uriah seems to have a hard time relaxing. He gets snippy easily, and isn't very hard to offend, sending him into sullen moods that aren't fun for anyone. Luckily, he wears himself out quickly. Uriah tends to be either 100% on, or asleep. He gets tired easily, and between classes is usually napping.

How would this character describe themself? What do they think are their best and worst qualities?
Uriah thinks he's creative, funny, outgoing and cool. He thinks he's become a whole lot less of a miserable piece of shit over the last year or so, which is great for everyone. He's good looking and can play the guitar. He's a Quidditch player. He didn't die. Really, what else could anyone ask of him? Uriah is superficially confident, like he's checking off boxes on a list. He has a very easy time dismissing peoples' complaints about him, and although his childhood wasn't easy, he was always the center of attention. Uriah is used to people noticing and caring about him, and doesn't fade into the background very readily.

He's good at waiting things out and putting up with similarly difficult people. He can't judge you for being awful when he is, most likely, even more awful. Uriah might even go as far as saying that he's kind of a nice person who likes being helpful (if it's not too much work). He likes children and animals. He doesn't like looking at serious injuries because he gets sympathy pains in the backs of his legs. These are all traits of a mostly good kid, right?

But... he does know he's an asshole. And he's annoying. He did some damage to the relationship between him and his family just because he was upset. He knows he's lazy, and it drives his mom and dad up the wall. He's just kind of bitter about, well, existence. Not caring about anything gets him by most of the time, but Uriah also feels listless and irritated a lot of the time. He doesn't want to hurt people, but that only seems to occur to him after he's let them down. He's stopped apologizing because he doesn't think they want to hear it, and come to think about it, "bad at apologies" is a pretty shitty quality. For all his confidence, Uriah anticipates being dislikes.

What drives them to action? Doing good? Getting rich? Receiving praise?
Not much, honestly. Uriah is lazy, and it takes a lot to motivate him to do anything he didn't already want to do. He's a wanderer with no map, just floating through his teenage years. He thinks his childhood should have made him into an inspirational beam of sunshine, and he's is more than a little resentful that he's not up to snuff. Being called "brave" or "strong" gets an immediate negative reaction out of him. He doesn't want to think about the future, and he doesn't want to talk to anyone about his "second chance" or how he learned to appreciate his life. It all feels very hollow to him.

But Uriah's not totally without drive. Short term goals and immediate validation resonate with him a little better. He'd rather enjoy himself now than wait for a later, bigger reward that he may or may not receive in the future. He'll help if a friend needs him to or if he sees someone crying, but actual long-term plans aren't his specialty. It's not like he's in any hurry, though. Uriah's plenty patient, but he WILL space out on his role in your grand plan if you don't remind him when the time comes. Honestly, he wasn't planning on getting this far in life.

What is this character's greatest fear?
If you asked him, Uriah would say nothing scares him anymore. There's no boogeyman, who cares if someone doesn't like you, dating sucks, everyone dies eventually. There's a shadow looming over Uriah's life, though, one he tries very hard to ignore. Not caring is a lot easier than thinking about being dragged back into the routine of his childhood: hospital beds, drugs, nausea, isolation. He'd rather just not talk about it. He says talking about it just makes him feel worse, but he wouldn't really know since he's never entertained that conversation for more than a few minutes.

Uriah's boggart is a Healer.

What is their sense of humor like? Are they chronically unserious? How's their comedic timing? Do they hate potty humor?
Uriah will do anything to get a laugh or a groan, or maybe even a punch in the arm. To put it lightly, he's irreverent and attention-seeking. In class he interrupts lessons with jokes, and friends are subjected to constant teasing. Sometimes he gets mean, other times he gets crass. It doesn't really matter as long as eyes are on him. He makes inappropriate jokes and flirts with anyone just to make sure they notice him. It's just a bonus if they take him up on the offer.

Uriah says a cliche to insist he's covering up his insecurities and fears with humor... but he is. It's very hard to have a serious conversation with him, because he's constantly cracking jokes or rolling his eyes and calling your sincerity cheesy. It's a way to keep people at a distance if they know reaching out will only result in him being a jerk.

Is the glass half empty, half full, or something else?
At just seventeen Uriah has the pessimism and bitterness of a much older man. He acts like he's just being the voice of reason, but considering he never really objects to the bullshit (and often encourages it) shows that he has little real interest in reason. Yeah sure, this plan will never work but he can't wait to die! Uriah's highly anxious and highly negative, but loves the adrenaline rush he gets from taking a risk. He's not wholly able to deal with his own mortality, and has made a conscious decision to just not think about it at all. Pessimism and nihilism bleed into one another, but he's a little too high strung to go too far in either direction.

Altogether it makes it hard for him to really care about consequences. If he doesn't think he'll pass this test anyway, why study? If he knows he can't hold down a relationship, why be faithful? It's a real self-fulfilling prophecy that leads to so many bad drunken party decisions. Uriah doesn't really see how this self-destructive behavior effects anyone besides himself.

Do they have any pet peeves?
Sappy inspiration porn stories. This is very much an internalized guilt and anxiety issue, but Uriah immediately rejects and mocks messages about positivity and loving yourself. He can't stand being part of a narrative that inspires people to appreciate their lives because hey, at least they weren't like him and his family. It's a very cynical interpretation.

How does this character handle tense social situations like arguments/fights?
Uriah seems like he'd be laid back on account of how lazy and tired he always is, but Uriah's moody and has a sharp tongue on him. He's not one for yelling matches, and Scarlett's way more likely to throw a punch than Uriah, but he's the king of shitty remarks. He knows how to piss people off, and when he's upset, sometimes it just slips out. By now he's an expert at pushing people away, and he's not afraid to be a little mean when he wants his space.

FUN FACTS:
  • Shamelessly treats the Sophomores like they're little kids. Anyone his sister's age or younger is an infant.
  • Has been calling Scarlett "Scary Scarlett" since he was six and refuses to stop.
  • Calls everyone by their least favorite nickname on a regular basis.
  • Speaks in a heavy Appalachian accent that he hopes drives the out-of-towners wild.
  • While Uriah is technically healthy at the moment, he suffers from a number of mild symptoms, either from his illness or the treatment.
  • THE BAND: Uriah on guitar/backup vocals, Aristotle on drums, Viola on lead vocals, Skip on bass, Maisy on fiddle, [unknown] on ???. No, they don't have a name yet, stop asking. Their style is crunchy garage rock with a little blues and country influence.

SKILLS

LANGUAGES: English
HOBBIES: Flying, shooting, reading, music, flirting, partying, joking, drawing, harassing Scarlett, irritating people, napping.
SKILLS:
MUSIC: (★★★★★) Uriah couldn't always go out and play with the other kids, and while most attempts at consoling him fell flat, he'll admit to getting suckered in by music and art therapy. He had a lot of time to practice, and made good use of it. He started with the flute, but the flute isn't very cool. After that, it was nothing but guitars for him. Acoustic, then electric as he became obsessed with rock music. He was excited to get into music class, only to learn that the electric guitar didn't usually have a place in concert or marching band. So, back to the flute it was. He's... not very good at it, frankly. He can sing nicely, too, but isn't going to be belting anytime soon.

He has a real ear for music and pitch, can play by ear, memorizes tuns easily and is proving to be a promising songwriter. He'd rather write rock or blues, but will allow himself to be pushed around in class by Ms. Beridze. He's not especially ambitious (i.e. incredibly lazy), and her high hopes for him are met with slightly embarrassed shrugs and whatevers.

But maybe Wildgulch is rubbing off on him, because Uriah is cobbling together a band (like, a rock band, Ms. Beridze), which so far consists of himself on lead guitar, Aristotle on drums, [vocalist, guitar no.2, bass, etc.]. The name's still TBA.

ART: (★★★★☆) Uriah's style is scratchy and wild, definitely on the abstract side. All sharp angles and colors that bleed together. He likes to do portraits with heavy inked shadows. He's a little lazy about studying anatomy, but enjoys figure studies. Once again, his sketches come out very abstract, focused more on movement than anatomy. His art is good, but not conventionally pretty. (Pencil, charcoal, ink and watercolor.)

SHOOTING: (★★★☆☆) Mostly from having absorbed the culture around him, since he was usually too sick to join in. He's great at shooting pesky cans lined up on the fence, though. (Uriah would never admit it, but Scarlett really is a better shot than him.)

QUIDDITCH: (★★★☆☆) He was a reserve last year, and if not for his rivalry with Scarlett, he'd probably still be there. Being outdone by his little sister is just not acceptable. He's a reliable Chaser who's particularly good at tricky shots and passes, but often feels like the weak link of the trio.

MAGIC: (★☆★☆★☆) It's anyone's guess how Uriah's spells are going to come out. On the one hand, they are powerful. On the other, he has an incredibly difficult time controlling that power. He can't legally get an Apparition licence because he can't control how far he goes, and might teleport himself into a wall. Everything he does is just too much. Even when not actively casting a spell, every now and then the magic seems to leak out of him. This causes minor accidents and quirks, like a child showing their first signs of being a witch or wizard.

KISSING: (★★★★★) wink wonk

SLEEPING: (★★★★★) He's just so fucking tired.

HISTORY

FAMILY:
NETTIE HATFIELD, Mom, convenience store clerk. A fiery woman who's known for being incredibly hard on the teens she's in charge of at the local Magimart. You can find potion ingredients, garbage snacks, smokes and booze there, so a no-nonsense attitude is a must. She brags about Tennyson, smothers Uriah, and tells Scarlett to stop getting into so many fights. It's just not right.

VALENTINE HATFIELD, Dad, local sheriff. Conservative and protective, Valentine's the kind of dad who greets Scarlett's dates with a magical shotgun. He wasn't emotionally prepared to deal with having a son as sick as Uriah was, and still doesn't know if he should tell him to man up or slow down.

TENNYSON HATFIELD, older brother, Mothgarden alumnus. Small town boy done good. Tennyson was valedictorian of his class when he graduated from Peckenpaugh 4 years ago, and went on to become a promising young Auror. He was always a golden child, but that doesn't mean he lacks the Hatfield wild streak; he was just better at hiding it than Uriah and Scarlett. When he visits, he's smothering and a little too pleased with himself. He's a hometown hero, and his parents' pride and joy.

SCARLETT HATFIELD, younger sister, Mothgarden sophomore. A pain. Sibling rivalry galore. Uriah wants to be a proper protective older brother who looks out for his kid sister, but he's never been in a place where he could.

BACKGROUND: You hear the name Hatfield and you might make an immediate assumption, and in Uriah's case, it's right on the money. His family line descends from the Hatfields of the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud, the same feud that solidified the negative stereotype of the violent hillbilly from the Appalachian mountains. The whole story's a bit more nuanced than what most people have heard, and Uriah can tell you the real version (with a notable Hatfield bias), but it's a sore subject with older generations. It left a smear on the area that it's never quite recovered from, and there's still the occasional tussle between individuals from the two families. Officially, however, the hatchet's been long since buried, even if the ghosts of Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy still like to complain about one another if you visit their graves.

It was just as big of a deal with the magical community as it was for muggles. The feuding families hadn't always been magical, but the area saw a sudden uptick in muggleborns in the early 1800's, which happened to include most of the prominent figures in the feud. Maintaining the Statute of Secrecy was especially tricky for the MACUSA, because neither family was interested in lying to their relatives and friends about the magic in their veins. It was a celebration when a child turned out to be magical, and the phenomenon became increasingly common. In modern times, you're about as likely to be born a magical Hatfield or McCoy as you are to be a Squib, and locally there's not much prejudice either way. It's still seen as a good break to have a magical kid, but on the other hand, an unusual number of those magical kids end up sick. A lot of Wizarding researchers from across the world have studied the Tug Valley and its unusual genetics, and in previous decades the area has been used by Purists as an example of the results of rampant blood impurity due to the high number of Squibs and magical genetic disorders.

While these are interesting facts, none of them mattered a great deal to Valentine and Nettie Hatfield. Both were magical, and anticipated it was likely their offspring would be as well. They got it right three times in a row: Tennyson, then Uriah three years later, and Scarlett a couple years after that. They lived in a rural village outside of the muggle town, populated by those more on the magical side, but that line is blurry in Tug Valley. They didn't have a lot of money, but Nettie was the senior employee of the biggest magical convenience store around, and Valentine was promoted to sheriff five months after Scarlett was born. Things were looking pretty idyllic.

But Uriah wasn't a very active toddler. In fact, he was lethargic, bruising easily and always tired or ill. The magical accidents that are associated with blossoming witches and wizards were intense, and sometimes frightening or dangerous. Scarlett was still an infant, and Tennyson was climbing every tree his arms could reach, but Uriah was sick more often than not. The first Healer they took him to couldn't figure it out, and neither could the second, but the third diagnosed three year old Uriah with Hatfield's Thaumetic Hematophobia. HTH was a disease unique to the area, and not all children inflicted with it survived into adulthood.

This diagnosis changed the course of Uriah's family dramatically and irrevocably. He was in an out of hospitals until Healers reigned in his inflammations, but it wasn't a cure. Relapses were frequent, and Uriah missed a lot of school. He didn't make friends with anyone besides the other kids at the hospiral, who either went back home or died. Even when he was at home, he was still sick, still couldn't really go out, still felt like he lost chunks of his childhood to the disease and its treatment. He stayed in, did artwork, played the guitar, and waited for the next operation or round of chemo. Uriah was a difficult kid, moody and irreverent, constantly teasing his siblings until they couldn't stand him. He fought with his parents, talked back to Healers, and openly resented gestures of hope and positivity.

Despite his pessimism, it looked like Uriah was on track to go to Peckenpaugh freshman year (a year late, he'd be older than his peers) when a another intense relapse sent him back to the hospital. It was devastating for his parents, and Uriah was furious with the unfairness of it all. He refused to go into high school as a sixteen year old freshman, the same year as his sister, Scarlett. Through the latest rush of treatment, he studied until he could transfer in as a sophomore. ("Assuming I don't die," he said sullenly, earning a scolding from his mother.)

And it worked. Newer, stronger potions had left him healthy enough to go to school and he and Scarlett lined up to be sorted. With a flurry of pink blossoms, it was announced Scarlett would be in Mothgarden. When the Sorting Path tried to direct him to Mothgarden, too, Uriah took the closest alternative door: Wildgulch. He knew (or thought he knew) that Scarlett would hate having to see his face every day. Most people he interacted with regularly did. That had been his plan all along.

But finally getting to go to public school uninterrupted did a lot of good things for Uriah. It also gave him a stage to really show off his more obnoxious side, but he became less bitter and more fun. He got healthy enough to play Quidditch! He tried booze for the first time! He touched a boob and kissed another dude all in one night! The same old symptoms followed him, and sometimes books fell off shelves because he got too excited, but it was... manageable. It didn't get in his way anymore.

Uriah loved the attention he got for his good looks and affable personality, and it immediately went to his head. Uriah quickly became known for being trouble. Just an unreliable heartbreaker who'll say you're the only one this week, and be caught kissing some other girl at the party next weekend. Uriah didn't really care, though. In fact, he didn't really care about anything but the here and now. What kind of teenager knows what they want to do when they grow up? If they grow up. His symptoms haven't flared up again in a while, but hey, life is short and his might be especially short. We're all going to die and nothing matters!

MISCELLANEOUS

WAND: 12 1/5", red spruce, White Thing horn core, precise
FAMILIAR: Jimmy, an opossum that's been with Uriah for nearly a decade, given to him when he was about seven and had to go in for anothe rlengthy hospital stay. The little guy's pretty old at this point, and his breath is not for the faint of heart. Jimmy's day consists mostly of eating, sleeping, and being carried around in Uriah's shirt. Uriah's protective of him and he's constantly worried about his health, sometimes yelling at his roommates because their damn hijinks are stressing Jimmy out.

Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield famously had a bear for a familiar, and so do a couple of Uriah's aunts and uncles. It's very inconvenient for everyone involved.

CAREER GOALS: None. If asked, he'll usually respond with something flippant. Maybe his band'll get famous and everyone can get off his back.

PART-TIME JOB: Worked at Dez's Dining Room last year but got fired for being an all around terrible employee. He kept shirking duties, leaving Presley with extra work and dropped shifts.
CLASSES:
CHARMS: Uriah gets anxious about Charms. Some days it just hurts to get spells out, or they get way out of control, and that's not thew kind of attention he wants. He plays (extra) lazy in this class to avoid it. It's the only wandwork-heavy class he's taking.

POTIONS: Oh fuck this class. Uriah cannot keep up with Mr. Berzelius to save his life.

CRYPTOZOOLOGY & MAGIZOOLOGY: Uriah likes the hands-on work because it amounts to getting to pet a cute animal in his eyes.

DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS: AKA naptime. He's pretty sure he's going to fail this class.

HISTORY OF MAGIC: Ms. Dorkins stops him from falling asleep with her energy, but he did offer to be her rebound after the divorce, which was apparently not funny.

MUSIC: He wishes there was more modern music involved, but he's a talented musician and is actually pretty motivated. Music theory often makes him drift off, though.

OUTDOOR MAGIC: It's kinda like being back home. He's got a little bit of a leg up, but knows Scarlett can trounce him at all this stuff.

WIZARD LIT: Uriah likes reading and likes talking. It's pretty irreverent in group discussions, though, and is sometimes behind on his assigned reading.

AESTHETIC MAGIC: Another class Uriah actually cares about without needing to be nagged endlessly.

EXTRA-CURRICULARS:
QUIDDITCH (CHASER): This is Uriah's first yeah on first string. He's not that hard to motivate and clearly wants to be there, but Gemma needs to stay on his case so he really puts in his all at practice. Endurance is hard on Uriah, though, and he loses his breath very easily when he overextends himself.

ADVENTURE CLUB: Sometimes. You know, if he's feeling it.

CREATIVE WRITING: He wants to work on his lyrics, which translates to reading a lot of poetry. He's the kind of guy who delights in finding a really horny poem and reading it out loud to the class.

PRINT & YEARBOOK: His assignments are always finished last minute, if not outright late.

MARCHING & CONCERT BAND: Being a Quidditch player means the band's down a flute when he's in the air. Considering his, uh, skill level with it, he's not usually missed. Uriah constantly asks for solos just to annoy everyone with his squeaking. Is there a way to make him sit out of concert band too?

SORTING?: Everything about the sorting hall pointed Uriah towards Mothgarden, but moments earlier that's where it had sent his little sister, Scarlett. He figured he was doing her a favor by walking through the adjacent door instead which was, uhhhh... Wildgulch! Sure, whatever. So he's not the most motivated Wildgulch out there, who cares? Someone needs to remind his housemates to chill out every once in a while, although he does love to rile them up.

Wildgulch has been a good influence on Uriah, who's sometimes reluctantly motivated by his peers' get-up-and-go attitude.
